Matta rice is an indigenous variety of rice grown in Palakkad district of Kerala, India. It is different from brown rice. It is popular in Kerala and coastal Karnataka in India and Sri Lanka where it is used on a regular basis for idlis, appams and plain rice. Matta rice or Kerala red rice, however, retains this outer coat for all its natural goodness. With increased quantities of minerals, vitamins, fibre and more, Matta rice goes for gold with its contribution to a healthier diet.
